The local currency is the CFA Franc.
Foreign currencies other than the French francs can only be changed in Cotonou. If you’re coming from Nigeria change excess ‘naira’ into CFA at the border as banks in Benin will not accept them. Food, transport and accommodation are inexpensive in Benin – it is a budget traveller’s dream destination.

It is best to carry your travellers’ cheques in French Francs, Euros or Pound Sterling to avoid additional exchange charges. Cotonou is the only reliable place to get your money changed. Credit Cards have limited acceptability in Benin and it is a good idea to check with your card company on details prior to departure.
